October 8, 2009

I’m currently working on collaborating with a friend of mine Natasha Jacobs to devise a new music theatre work…we are also looking at working with another good friend of mine, James Simpson who is a fantastic composer in his own right, but I believe what he is really good at contributing to shows is an overall understanding…he knows which sections work and what doesn’t, knows where to cut numbers and has a great gut instinct on most things theatre. Not only that but he is an incredible arranger/pianist/md…I really feel like both these writers inspire me to work to my greatest potential.

Although the piece is in it’s VERY early stages i’m quite excited by it’s potential. At the moment, it remains as a few scenes between 2/3 characters and we have some lyrical/musical ideas…we are all just quite busy (i’m finishing my degree which is done in a month or so, tash is finishing a one woman show and james has just written a musical that is playing now!)

Hopefully i’ll be able to upload some demos onto this page in the next few months…i really look forward to being able to do a workshop of this piece mid next year (2010)

LATEST: I’m getting round to uploading some of the tracks and maybe even some behind the scenes rehearsal music that is yet to be released…

this is my new solo pop music that i’ve started writing for a three piece. these two musos really inspire me and is very driven by the music I was brought up on (mainly ben folds/piano pop inspired music)

so this is a fairly significant chunk of my artistic output at the moment. I have been working with Simon for about 3 or so years in multiple capacities. The first one is playing in his band..(it was originally called Divine Blue, but is now a solo project concept under Simon Paul) the other is my contribution to the artistic imput..

i’d like to think i’ve had significant imput for the album that’s taken a solid two years to create. For me, my main input has been in the piano/keyboard part arrangements; going into the studio and suggesting parts that might work or giving more of a compositional focus to the work….for example, at times i found myself asking simon basic principles of pop song writing (to me…with a technical mind!) “what purpose does that part serve in this section? does it contribute to the overall intent of the piece?” if not, “why is it there?” . Throughout the process i found myself asking that more and more times as i worked with 3 audio engineers/producers. The balance to me is fine one between sound production and songwriting…it was something i still am trying to find a medium with…

Apart from that, i helped writing some orchestral arrangements which took a HUGE amount of time and effort. Once completed, we took them into the studio and recorded the string quintet i arranged for and fixed up the midi tracks to support it (as it was a synthesis blend)

At the moment we are currently working on our live shows and are playing a lot more regularly to help get the name out there…

I plan on updating this page too…i’d like to give a more comprehensive background to what happened during the “divine blue” stages…which is interesting..well to me at least…to document…

Sounds like a Holiday

Justina Lui spoke to composer Dean Gourley about his latest project Holiday, a collaboration with choreographer Leah Landau.

The synopsis for Holiday describes “a contemporary dance piece which explores the notion that every single person, at some point in their lives, has wanted to kill somebody.” An original work, Dean’s aim was to create “a visual interplay between the dancers who react to the music and story themes and vice versa.”

“Leah came up with the original concept and I proposed what I could contribute to give form to the entire piece. It was a highly collaborative process, she would give me ideas and I would come back to her with musical suggestions. It was concurrent physical and aural development.”

Over the two month rehearsal period, the show has been elaborated and refined from a linear scripted dialogue interjected with dance to a continuous 30 minute flow of scenes in which relationships between family characters and ensemble cast are explored.

The score is entirely pre-recorded and features “rhythms made from voices and the sounds the cast make when in character. They become almost drum and bass type sounds.” Different dance styles and Rhythmic ostinatos are used to define characters. “There’s a ballerina who does hip hop and break dancing, it’s amazing! Not all of them are trained dancers but they deliver the story with such conviction.”

Dean is looking forward to the show’s opening “I have the utmost respect for the cast – they have all done such a fantastic job!” With ticket prices cheaper than a parma and pot, there’s no excuse not to go.

Holiday runs from Wednesday 12 August to Saturday 15 August at 7:45pm in the Guild Theatre, Union House. $15/$12/$10. Bookings: holiday.mudfest@gmail.com. For more info visit http://holidaydance.com.au
